Jackie Brown

Jackie Brown was an amazingly funny screenplay but also thought provoking. In our own interpretation we decided, to figure out what the themes and characters roles and personalities were and how that contributed to the story and if they could be exchanged for a different interpretation of the film. At first we found it hard to let go of the preconceived notion we had made up in our mind of the film, because most of us know if was a Quentin Tarantino film, and we also knew who he had cast for some of the roles. We knew that Quentin had written many of these parts with certain actors in mind, for instead Orell, was played perfectly by Samuel l. Jackson. This made it even harder to break free from the already made film and create our own version.

Orell is more unstable n dangerous.

Orell is involved in crimes. He is unstable, ruthless, and doesn’t trust people.  He has no problems killing.
Jackie, however,
keeps her cool,. She is astute, and clever. She’s trying to not go to jail, she plays everyone except for mMax.
Max is Jackie partner in crime. An unappealing accomplice, who has a crush on Jackie, almost gentleman like.
The cops seemed rather immature and juvenile. They screw with people a lot in this screenplay
Possible eras- mobs, gangster, recess, film noir, element of crimes n drugs, corrupt law.
Does Jackie have to be a girl?

Cinematographer - …
Scene – Jackie pretends to freak out, and cam freaks out.
Staging – portray how cool Jackie brown is.

Lolita

This book was rather hard to place within a genre. It wasn't written to fit a certain genre. Although it is close to a prison memoir because of the innocence of the writer, "I'm the victim". This novel was interesting but it took a lot to get into it. It is tricky to read, because one has to constantly remind themselves that this is an untrustworthy narrator. He is trying to convince the reader that everything he did was alright. He even gives us the events to back up his innocence, but how as the reader do we know that these events occurred as he says or if they even occurred. It is very one sided.
At first glance many might confuse this with a love story, but in my opinion, it was more of infatuation, or idolizing. There are some aspects of love such as fatherly love, but it isn't really there until very late in the novel. It is quite unnerving that he bestows another name on Dolores. Even though Lolita is physically the same as Dolores, they are quite different in his mind. Dolores is more educated, and even older. Lolita is his mind is younger.

We loved
each other with a premature love, marked by a fierceness
that so often destroys adult lives. I was a strong lad and
survived; but the poison was in the wound, and the wound
remained ever open, and soon I found myself maturing amid
a civilization which allows a man of twenty-five to court a girl
of sixteen but not a girl of twelve pg14

Metropolis

This movie was really cool. Even with the missing parts, I thought it was very interesting. I loved the sets, and the way they handled certain "effects".

Hunger Games

At first I wasn't that excited about the book, but then one of my good friends told me how obsessed he was with them, and how excited he was to see the movie when it came out. It changed the way I felt about the book. I went from dreading it, to looking forward to reading this book. It was really interesting. As I read on, I began to ask myself questions, like "what if it was me?". This book was surprisingly easy to read. It was very engaging as well. I love the beginning before the games, when we begin to get an idea of what kind of world they live in, and what is the norm for them. I also found it interesting how this contrasted to luxurious life of other that are later on introduced in the book. Their priorities are quite different. It isn't about survival anymore, at least not from the wild.

Day of the Locus

This was a hard read for me. I kept getting lost, but there were I few parts that I did enjoy. I was different as the story didn't progress as I thought it would. In Computer Animation, we are drilled with how story should have a certain structure, so I'm used to seeing books as I read them as films as they play in my mind. I didn't know what to make of this one. I had an upsetting ending considering how it was about he had gone to Hollywood to become something. There are so many themes and motives in this book. This was definitely not a light hearted read.

Wizard of Oz

I enjoyed reading this book far more than I had expected. Although I had seen the movie several times, I felt like I was seeing this story being told in a whole new light. It was darker, even though this is a children's story. I really love how Baum subtlety shows through out the book how the characters already possess what ever they have been seeking. I also really like how it was written. I love books that are very descriptive, so I can picture exactly what's happening as I read along. Baum makes many assumptions in his book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
